Website of the Week

image courtesy of poems.comThis week’s Website of the Week is www.poems.com. It is run by an organization called Poetry Daily, and they feature a new contemporary poem every day.  The daily poems come from new books, magazines, and journals and are a diverse sampling of the poetry that is being published right now.  It seems like most of the poems that people read are older “classic” poems that are taught in schools.  Poetry Daily helps expose people to some of the thousands of fresh and relevant poems being written today.

Website of the Week

image courtesy of yelp.comDo you feel like there are no good places to eat and shop in Topeka? Or are there restaurants and stores that you absolutely love?  The Website of the Week, www.yelp.com, can help you find your new favorite places around town.  All you have to do is type Topeka, KS into the city search spot, and you will see tons of reviews for places in Topeka.  After reading the review, I really want to eat at Hanover Pancake House, a place I hadn't heard of before.  You can also write your own reviews, so you can support a business that you love or share a bad experience that you've had.  The more reviews that people submit, the better resource www.yelp.com will become, so share your opinions!

Website of the Week

This Wednesday’s Website of the Week is www.engrish.com. English is a difficult language to learn.Image courtesy of engrish.com image courtesy of engrish.comThe whole meaning of a sentence can be changed if one word is wrong or out of place, often with very funny results.  www.engrish.com is a website that has pictures of hilarious mistakes in English printed on products and advertising from Japan.  It is the style to have words in English as decoration on clothing, signs and all kinds of other stuff, whether or not the average Japanese consumer knows what the words mean.  Just like the clothing and tattoos of Japanese characters that are popular in the U.S., the way that they look is more important than what they mean.  This leads to some extremely funny sayings.  I should warn you that this website made me laugh until I was snorting, so make sure you are in a place that it’s ok to laugh so hard you fall out of your chair.

Website of the Week

classof2k8.comThe Website of the Week is www.classof2k8.com. This website features 28 authors whose first novel for teens or kids comes out in 2008.  Fourteen of the novels are for young adults, and this website is a great way to learn about books that don’t have the name recognition of an already-famous author.  They have a blog to let you get to know the writers more personally and get lots of information about the upcoming book releases.  There are also contests and reading guides that will be updated throughout 2008.   So if you want to be on the cutting edge and discover the next J.K. Rowling before everybody else, check out this website!

Website of the Week

image courtesy of projectplaylist.comThis Wednesday's Website of the Week is http://www.playlist.com/. It lets you search for legal music on the web and add it to your own personal playlist.  The songs stream directly from their source sites to your playlist.  It's basically a collection of hyperlinks, so you can't download or burn the songs.  Click here for a lot more information about how the website works. One of my favorite things about the website is that you can listen to other people's playlists, so you can discover new music from people with similar taste.  Search by artist or song title to find your favorites.

Website of the Week

image courtesy of etsy.comThis Wednesday’s Website of the Week is www.etsy.com.  It’s a place to buy and sell anything handmade.  If you make any kind of craft, it’s easy to set up your own shop and sell your stuff.  They have everything from knitted socks to hand poured soap to toilet decals.  It’s easy to spend a lot of time browsing this website because they have a lot of ways to find exactly what you want.  You can view items by color, search for crafts made locally, or use their customized gift guides.  I think that my favorite feature is the Treasury section, where users can compile lists of their favorite items that follow a certain theme, like Pirates or Paris.  If you want to support some creative crafters by buying their unique stuff or just look at some crazy crafts, etsy.com is a fun website to visit.

Website of the Week

www.timeanddate.comThis week’s Website of the Week is www.timeanddate.com.  Have you ever wondered exactly what time the sun will set? Do you want to know what day of the week your birthday will be on when you turn 21? Or when you will be 10,000 days old? This website helps you find out all of these questions and a lot more.  It has time zone, date, sun, and moon calculators.  One of my favorite features is the customizable countdown for whatever date you are counting down the seconds for.  I also love the day and night world map, which shows the current position of the sun.

Website of the Week

This week's fun website is http://www.drawingnow.com/image courtesy of www.drawingnow.comIt's like a virtual art teacher with video tutorials that teach you to draw animals, people, and cartoons.  The step by step instructions are easy to follow, and can help even bad artists (like me) create great drawings.  There are lots of different tutorials, but the biggest sections are popular cartoons and anime/manga tutorials.  Whether you like Spiderman, Spongebob, or Naruto, there is a tutorial for you!

If you enjoy drawing anime and manga, come to the library's Anime Art Club.  The next event is January 15 from 5-6:30pm in the Lingo story room.

Website of the Week

The Website of the Week is Flip.com.  On this site, you can put together pictures, video, and music image courtesy of Flip.comto create your own digital flipbook.  After you make a profile, you can also make friends, join groups and send messages to other Flip.com users.  Some of the flip books that people have created are really great, so it's fun to browse and see what they have come up with.  This one about body image is one of my favorites, but there are a ton about a lot of different topics.  Flip.com also has themed contests with prizes like a makeover from Guess clothing company, a private concert, or your name in a new YA book. Click here for more contest info. Make sure that you share any awesome flipbooks that you make with us!

Website of the Week

image courtesy of strictlynophotography.comThis Wednesday’s Website of the Week is www.strictlynophotography.com.  It is a collection of pictures that were taken at places where photography is forbidden.  These rebellious photographers ignored the “no photos” signs and snapped away, then posted them on the website for everyone to enjoy.  You can view the forbidden photos by category, including “Art”, “Government”, “Religious”, and a lot more.  You can also post your own pictures, as long as they were taken at a place that does not allow photography.

Website of the Week

image courtesy of cuteoverload.comimage courtesy of cuteoverload.comThis Wednesday’s Website of the Week is http://cuteoverload.com/. It’s a blog with a collection of really cute photos and videos, mostly featuring kittens.  Even though the captions are pretty cheesy sometimes, the pictures are adorable enough to melt even the hardest of hearts.  So if you need some sweetness in your life, click the link and get ready to say “awwwww…”

Website of the Week

image courtesy of kissthisguy.comThis Wednesday's Website of the Week is http://www.kissthisguy.com/. It is an archive of lyrics to songs that people have misunderstood.  The name of the site comes from the commonly misheard Jimi Hendrix lyric, "'scuse me, while I kiss the sky."

Most of them are really funny and some are pretty embarrassing for the person who made the mistake.  You can browse the top rated misheard lyrics or search by song title or artist.  After reading through them, I think that I like some of the mistakes better than the real lyrics.  For example, someone thought that the Ramones song, "I Wanna Be Sedated" was actually " I Want a Piece of Bacon."  I do love bacon, but that's just funny.

Why should you think about your drink?

Thinkaboutyourdrink.com

A new study What America Drinks, is a comprehensive analysis of U.S. beverage consumption. It  suggests that making healthier beverage choices could play a key role in the battle against Americans' widening waistlines.

While people trying to lose weight may tend to focus on what's filling their plates, the new study suggests that it's time for Americans to take a closer look at what's in our glasses, cups, cans, bottles and car drink holders, too.

Beyonce and Tine Knowles promote milk!Read the key findings here, especially the results that suggest that sugary drinks like soda pop, sweetened tea and fruit juice are contributing to weight gain for many people. You can also receive a personalized beverage analysis – enter information about what you drank yesterday, and get recommendations and advice.

The National Milk Mustache "got milk?" Campaign is shining the spotlight on the importance of healthy mother daughter role-modeling with an ad featuring superstar Beyoncé and her mother, Tina Knowles. The celebrity mother-daughter duo are partners in the House of Dereon/Dereon clothing line and strongly believe in passing down good habits from generation to generation.

Gaia: An Online Anime Hangout Spot

Sample beginning Gaia avatarOne of the fastest growing online hangouts for teens is Gaia Online. Derek Liu launched the original site, Go-Gaia, in 2003 as a forum based website with an anime link list. (For more information, read the Big Boards’ interview.)

But now the site is so much more and it’s still FREE. Gaians start out by choosing a basic avatar and receiving a small wardrobe of clothes to pick and choose from. The avatars can then visit shops for additional clothing, change their hair at a salon, write in a journal, create a public profile, visit villages and to chat with other users, participate in roleplaying fiction forums, play games, discuss issues and anime on forums, post artwork and view other people’s artwork, and more! The money system in Gaia is very unique. Users earn coins for interacting with the website, whether it’s just surfing, playing a game or voting on the best artwork. It doesn’t require special software like Second Life, so you can visit Gaia from home or the library. And if you’ve put a lot of work into your avatar, you can export it to use as a photo on other forums or social networking sites.

So whether you love anime and manga, or you are looking for a new online hangout, Gaia might just be the place for you. Click on over and let me know what you think. Are there other new online sites you enjoy, besides the ever popular myspace and facebook sites?

Thanks Anne for letting us know about this site!

To Infinity and Beyond!

A Brief History of TimeA few weeks ago word got out that the brilliant physicist Stephen Hawking is about to take a space flight!  This is remarkable in many ways.  Dr. Hawking has suffered with MND (motor neuron disease) for four decades and yet has lectured and written about physics and space and our place in it all these years.  His weakened body rides in a wheelchair and he needs a computer to communicate well, but he is now about to TRAVEL INTO SPACE !

Caught in the Web: Cyberparodies

Sometimes you need a theme song to get psyched up. But sometimes there's not a perfect song to express your dilemma and you settle for listening to a parody instead. And thus the beauty of Cyberparodies. Here are some catchy ones:

The GEEKY fun
Blog It Like Its Hot by Eric Schwartz aka Smooth-E
Description: Parody of "Drop it like its hot" by SnooooP and Pharrell
“when the geeks try to get at ya
(Gotta know the talk, gotta know the talk)
If a blogger get attitude
(Put ‘im in my block, put ‘im in my block)"

She Blocked Me by Bob Ricci
Description: Parody of "She Hates Me" by Puddle of Mudd
“One night she said brb
Waited up for an hour or three
Then I started to realize
She wasn’t coming back online
She frickin’ blocked me
Trust--she frickin’ blocked me”

Lies! All lies!

Guess you can’t believe everything on YouTube.

From The Globe and Mail:

Bree (Photo Courtesy TheGlobeandMail.com)She was supposed to be a typical teenager, expressing angst about her boyfriend, her parents and her somewhat ordinary life.

Bree, as she was called, began posting videos on the popular website YouTube.com this summer. There wasn't much to the clips, just a 16-year old girl chatting to a camera about her life in a small town "hours from a mall."

But the videos struck a chord with YouTube watchers and soon "lonelygirl15" was pulling in as many as 600,000 viewers at a time, putting her videos at the top of the website's offerings. She also became an Internet darling, spawning dozens of chat rooms that discussed every aspect of her life and speculated about her real identity.

But now Bree's cover has been blown by a trio of computer geeks who discovered the teenager was really an actress with possible ties to a powerful Hollywood agency.

Caught in the Web: Television without Pity

Tubey courtesy of Television Without PityIt’s quickly becoming that time of year again: new TV season. Television Without Pity is one of the best sites for keeping current with your favorite new and old shows.  So whether you love reality TV and are hooked on American Idol or you love the drama of shows like the Gilmore Girls, TWoP is a great site for you. Besides recaps of episodes, they’ve included polls and forum discussions too. For example on the O.C. forums you can vote for the best and worst episodes ever, and on the Smallville forums you can read spoilers or talk about the show’s fashion.

Personally, my TV goal is to get caught up on Season 2 of Veronica Mars so that I can watch the new season when the CW premieres. If you are ready for some TV on DVD, the library has many of your favs. So check 'em out or put yourself on hold for One Tree Hill, Charmed, Everwood, Grey’s Anatomy, Simpsons, Laguna Beach, Degrassi, Veronica Mars, The O.C., Gilmore Girls, Smallville, American Idol, or ….

What shows are you looking forward to watching this fall? Do you use a different website to keep track of your favorite shows? Post a comment to let us know!
