If You Love the TV Series Heroes, Try...

Heroes graphic novelWith the writer's strike, it might be awhile before you get to watch a new episode of Heroes. In the meantime, feed your addiction by checking out one or more of these books.

The most obvious choice is the graphic novel based on the TV series. Heroes. Volume 1 is on order, but you can place a hold on it already.  I hear it's fantastic!

So This Is How It EndsSo This Is How It Ends by Tui Sutherland
If you are intrigued by Peter (and other heroes) attempts to save the world from an apocalyptic future, try this one. In New York, Kali wakes to an empty subway car, and an even emptier city. Venus and Gus survive an earthquake in Los Angeles and realize they have to deal with more than just the aftershocks. In Chile, Tigre finds himself in an unfamiliar jungle, and strangely not alone. And Amon, in Egypt, can see his path but is blind to the full picture. These five teens are suddenly trapped in a seemingly deserted world. Why have they survived? What force—or intelligence—connects them? Drawn inexorably toward one another, they only know their future involves an experience outside anything they could have imagined and they will learn that they have the power to complete the destruction of Earth or to save it.

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
If you are hooked on the quests such as “save the cheerleader, save the world” or Hiro’s quest to re-establish the legendary acts of Kensei, try this one. Twelve-year-old Percy has always been considered a troubled boy, hopping from school to school. When his life is in danger, though, he is told the secret of heritage: he’s a demigod who seems to attract mythical monsters. He’s quickly shipped off to Camp Half-Blood Hill to learn more about the Greek gods and begin a quest to prevent war between the immortals. This is a wild, action-filled, tale full of humor.

Fade by Robert Cormier
Try this book if you are intrigued by the darker aspects of the series and the internal struggle of good vs. evil within individuals such as Niki and Sylar. This book is told by alternating narrators who describe three teen boys in three different decades who discover their family’s extraordinary power of invisibility. Their ability enables them to consider criminal acts of violence as well as peeping tom opportunities which will warp their personalities and change the lives of the people around them. This is a dark, seductive, gripping tale that will haunt you.

The Eyes of Kid Midas by Neal ShustermanThe Eyes of Kid Midas
If Peter is the character you like the most and you are attracted to the struggle of good vs. evil but would like a lighter, much more comic read, try Shusterman’s book. He tells the story of one boy's struggle to control his thirst for revenge against a class bully as well as his desire for everything else. Atop the Divine Watch lies the key to the most awesome power imaginable--a pair of sunglasses that grant their wearer access to their every dream. But before Kevin Midas realizes it, his wishes are tearing his world apart.

Hero by Perry Moore
HeroIf Claire’s struggle to please her father, live under the radar, and still find a way to explore her abilities is the most compelling part of the series for you, then perhaps you’ll enjoy Hero. Thom Creed is used to being alone. Even though he's a high school basketball star, he still isn't accepted because of his father, Hal. Hal Creed was one of the greatest and most beloved superheroes of The League until the disastrous Wilson Towers incident. After that, Thom's mother disappeared and his proud father became an outcast. The last thing in the world Thom would ever want is to disappoint his father, so Thom keeps two secrets from him. The first secret is that he's gay. The second is that he has a superpower--the power to heal others. Initially, Thom has trouble controlling his powers without making himself ill. But with trial and error, he improves and is asked to join the League. Even though he knows it will upset his dad, Thom can't resist.

Hidden Talents by David Lubar
If you enjoy watching the characters discover and test their abilities, check out Lubar’s novel. Six kids shipped off to an alternative boarding school discover their misunderstood psychic talents are the cause of past and current problems. The six bond over their discovery and attempt to help each other control their abilities while keeping their abilities a secret.

The latest gossip about Gossip Girl

It Had to Be You: The Gossip Girl Prequel

Fans of the Gossip Girl series by Cecily Von Ziegesar have a lot to be happy about in the next few months.  The books focus the dramatic and fabulous lives of a group of friends (and enemies) that attend fancy private schools in New York City.  The new prequel to the series, It Had to Be You, comes out in October.  This will be the last book that focuses on the same characters in the series, and it’s supposed to tie up a lot of loose ends from the beginning. Even though it doesn’t come out until October, you can put your name on the waiting list for the new book now.

Also, this fall Gossip Girl will be on TV as well as on your bookshelves.  Click here to go to the website and watch a clip from the show.  The TV series is the new project of the creators of The OC, so I’m guessing that Gossip Girl will have the same glamour andgossip girl show over-the-top drama that made watching The OC so much fun.  If you’ve read the books, what do you think of the casting?  Do the characters look like how you pictured them?  The first episode of Gossip Girl will be Wednesday, September 19 on the CW.

Say Goodbye to Veronica Mars

Gossip GirlThe CW is making big changes on their network. Two of their best shows: Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars have been cancelled. In fact, Veronica Mars was one of my favorite TV shows and I’m more than a little disappointed that they cancelled it. The creator and writer, Rob Thomas, writes such funny, witty dialogue. I really hope that he either gets a new series or he goes back to writing young adult (YA) novels like the Rats Saw God.

In CW’s new line up, YA novelist Cecily Von Ziegesar, is getting a series based on the Gossip Girl books. I know those books are wildly popular so hopefully the show will be successful. Do you read the Gossip Girls books? What do you like about them? Post a comment below or lament the departure of Gilmore Girls and/or Veronica Mars.

A 'Jackass' gets married

Technologically gifted from cnn.com

You would think Bam might have learned something from fellow MTV reality show couples, Nick & Jessica, Dave & Carmen and Travis & Shanna, whose marriages all bit the dust after being filmed for various shows for the network.  (Though, there are rumblings of a reconciliation of sorts between Travis & Shanna.)  Hopefully, Bam’s marriage will last a long time, really if it lasts more than 3 years, he’s got the rest of the MTV couples beat.

From cnn.com:

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AP) -- Bam Margera -- professional skateboarder, prankster and MTV star -- just earned himself another title: husband.

Margera, 27, who became a punk hero on the shows "Jackass" and "Viva La Bam," married childhood friend Missy Rothstein, 26, in downtown Philadelphia on Saturday.

The couple wed in front of about 350 friends and family members -- and an MTV crew.

Margera is making his path to marriage into a nine-part reality television series called "Bam's Unholy Union." The wedding itself will be shown in the final episode in early April.

The O.C. no more

Technologically gifted from eonline.comFrom eonline.com:

Apparently when the bell tolled for Marissa Cooper, it also spelled curtains for the entire O.C.

After ordering up an abbreviated season of what was once TV's hottest prime-time teen drama (Beverly Hills, 90210 with even more beach time, if you will), Fox announced Wednesday that it has officially deep-sixed The O.C. The finale will air Feb. 22 after a nonstop run of new episodes starting Thursday.

"The O.C. season four finale will also be the series finale. This feels like the best time to bring the show to its close," O.C. creator and executive producer Josh Schwartz said in a statement. "Thanks to the hard work of our cast, crew and writers, we have enjoyed our best season yet, and what better time to go out than creatively on top."

Vaughniston Break-Up...for real

Technologically gifted from eonline.comFrom eonline.com:

Just when you thought it was safe to refer to Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn as a committed couple, they go and call the whole thing off.

"After Jennifer's trip to London several weeks ago, Jennifer and Vince mutually agreed to end their relationship, but continue to be good friends today," publicists Stephen Huvane and John Pisani said in a joint statement to People Tuesday.

With stories of their demise gracing magazine covers, the former Friends star traveled to London in October to visit Vaughn on the set of his latest film, the Christmas comedy Fred Claus. Earlier that month Aniston had appeared on her pal Oprah Winfrey's show to dispel the breakup talk, telling the talk show maven "no, no" when asked if Vaughniston was no more.

Keep reading about the real-life break-up of Vaughniston here.

Caught in the Web: Television without Pity

Tubey courtesy of Television Without PityIt’s quickly becoming that time of year again: new TV season. Television Without Pity is one of the best sites for keeping current with your favorite new and old shows.  So whether you love reality TV and are hooked on American Idol or you love the drama of shows like the Gilmore Girls, TWoP is a great site for you. Besides recaps of episodes, they’ve included polls and forum discussions too. For example on the O.C. forums you can vote for the best and worst episodes ever, and on the Smallville forums you can read spoilers or talk about the show’s fashion.

Personally, my TV goal is to get caught up on Season 2 of Veronica Mars so that I can watch the new season when the CW premieres. If you are ready for some TV on DVD, the library has many of your favs. So check 'em out or put yourself on hold for One Tree Hill, Charmed, Everwood, Grey’s Anatomy, Simpsons, Laguna Beach, Degrassi, Veronica Mars, The O.C., Gilmore Girls, Smallville, American Idol, or ….

What shows are you looking forward to watching this fall? Do you use a different website to keep track of your favorite shows? Post a comment to let us know!

More MTV couples bite the dust

Laguna Beach Cast

Seriously, the MTV curse thing is getting out of control.  You can now add Lauren Conrad and Jason Wahler to the ever growing list of MTV bust-ups that include Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, Carmen Electra and Dave Navarro and Travis Barker and Shanna Moakler.

From msn.com:
Bloom Is Off for MTV Couples

At the risk of spoiling season two of "The Hills," we have some bad news. Or good news, depending on whether you thought Lauren and Jason were made for each other or he was holding her back.
Lauren Conrad, the 20-year-old star of MTV's "The Hills" and, previously, "Laguna Beach," has split with her on-off-on boyfriend, Jason Wahler. This week has been a rough one for other MTV reality-show stars too: Conrad's fellow "Laguna" alum, Kristin Cavallari, has reportedly broken up with boyfriend Brody Jenner…

Make-ups and Break-ups

Dave Navarro Two of Hollywood’s most beautiful women are in the news, one for a break-up and the other for a make-up (and impending marriage).

Carmen Electra and Dave Navarro are amicably splitting after nearly three years of marriage. You might remember their reality show on MTV, Til Death Do Us Part: Carmen + Dave, capturing their plans and wedding (as I recall, her dress was gorgeous).

On the flipside, Pamela Anderson is finally settling down with long-time on-again-off-again beau Kid Rock. From MSN.com: "Feels like I've been stuck in a time warp," said the "Baywatch" bombshell in her cryptic diary entry. "Not able to let go of MY family picture ... it's been sad and lonely and frustrating ... I've raised my kids alone in hope of a miracle. Well my miracle came and went. And came back and back because he knew that I'd wake up one day and realize that I was waiting for nothing."
Star by Pamela Anderson Lee
Did you know that Pamela and Carmen have been paired together on numerous television shows and movies? Both were on Baywatch and starred in the Scary Movie films (although not in the same ones). Carmen guest starred on an episode of Stacked in 2005, a show that centers around one of the library’s favorite topics (books, duh).

Predict the Emmy winners!

Emmy Awards (Banner courtesy Emmys.org)
It’s that time of year again- the Emmy Awards are coming just in time for the fall lineup. Here are some of my picks for the winners:

Drama Series:  Grey’s Anatomy, hands down. Did you see the season finale?! Between the Denny/Izzie romance and McDreamy hooking up with Meredith… I can’t take the suspense! If they don’t win, my second vote is for House. He’s so deliciously crass yet he always manages to solve the hardest medical mysteries. Love it!

Comedy Series:  I have a soft spot for Zach Braff, but Scrubs seems to have gone downhill since season three. I predict Arrested Development will win and fans all over the world will be upset that it was cancelled. Again.
