Former Blink-182er's evolve into +44

Technologically gifted from eonline.com

From eonline.com:

Looks like Travis Barker's found something to keep his mind off his increasingly volatile breakup with wife Shanna Moakler: a new band.

With Blink-182 idling on "indefinite hiatus" and the group's singer-guitarist Tom DeLonge forming a new band, Angels & Airwaves, Barker and Blink mate Mark Hoppus are teaming up for a new project of their own, +44.

According to an announcement on Blink-182's Website, +44 (pronounced "Plus 44") takes its name from the international dialing prefix for the United Kingdom. The newly minted band will release its debut album, When Your Heart Stops Beating, via Interscope on Nov. 14.

Top 10 reasons to love Pretty Things

Pretty Things by Sarra Manning1. It’s the second novel from author Sarra Manning, the teen queen extraordinaire who wrote the rocking Guitar Girl.

2. You can read  Sarra Manning’s blog –  Anthems For The Teenage Girl. Her current obsessions range from The O.C. and Veronica Mars to the new Belle And Sebastian album.

3. Four people take turns telling this story.

4. Chapters start with song lyrics from Death Cab, Dashboard Confessional, The White Stripes, Britney, and The Velvet Underground.

5. The characters are kind of based on 10 Things I Hate About You, which is kind of based on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew.

6. Brie is in love with Lancome Juicy Tubes, Louis Vitton accessories, and Charlie, her gay best friend.

7. Charlie is in love with his low-top All Stars, 1980s teen movies, and serial heartbreaker (and straight guy) Walker.

8. Walker has only ever been in love with his VW Bug, until he meets Daisy (who already has a girlfriend.)

9. Daisy is too busy hating everyone for being sexist and homophobic to even know what love is.

10. Despite the mis-matched love rectangle, there is a lot of kissing going on in this book.

Popular Movies at the Box-Office

"Invincible" courtesy of CJOnlineApparently the idea of snakes on a plane did not appeal to movie
goers for more than one week. “Snakes on a Plane” moved to #6
on the Weekend Box-Office Summary.  “Invincible”, which is based
on a true story, came in as #1. A 30 year old teacher, Vince Papale,
who never played college football, lands a spot on the Philadelphia
Eagles. Sounds like a story that would entertain even those people
that weren’t crazy about football. “Talladega Nights” slipped to #2
and “Little Miss Sunshine” climbed to #3.

Do you agree?: Girls learn better from women teachers

A teacher helping a studentA new study concludes that your teacher’s gender affects your learning.

"WASHINGTON - For all the differences between the sexes, here’s one that might stir up debate in the teacher’s lounge: Boys learn more from men and girls learn more from women.

That’s the upshot of a provocative study by Thomas Dee, an associate professor of economics at Swarthmore College and visiting scholar at Stanford University. "

School is back in session, so what do you think? Do you prefer learning from a male or female teacher? Do you agree with these results?

Project Runway: "Make it work"

Technologically gifted courtesy of ew.com

Heidi Klum used to be another pretty face in a sea of pretty faces as a Victoria’s Secret model.  After 2 ½ seasons on Project Runway, though, she now has her own catch phrase, “Are you in or are you out?”  Entertainment Weekly has compiled a list of reasons why this little reality show is so addictive.  (My favorite is #5, I love you Tim Gunn!)

From ew.com:

Nina Garcia was just settling into her seat on a flight from Rome, eager to take a nap, when the teenage girl sitting next to her recognized her as the tough-to-please judge from Project Runway. ''I was like, 'I need to rest!''' recalls Garcia, who spends her days working as Elle magazine's fashion director. ''She just wanted to talk for eight hours about Project Runway!''

So, it seems, does anybody else who's gotten hooked on Bravo's behind-the-seams reality series (airing Wednesdays at 10 p.m.). A competition that follows 15 budding designers as they spin sartorial gold out of everything from luxurious silk to recycled plastic, Runway has blossomed into an undeniable hit.

Read on to see why Project Runway is a hit.

Tim's Take and Rucker’s blogs are not to be missed, they will change your life.  Well, probably not, but crazy funny nonetheless.

In one split second, everything can be Wrecked

Wrecked coverWrecked by E. R. Frank
Wrecked is the kind of book that haunts you with its stark look at one dysfunctional family and what happens when the teenage daughter gets in fatal car accident. I assumed that the daughter was drunk and this would be a cautionary tale of drunk driving; it wasn’t. I thought this might bring the family together and heal them; it doesn’t. This book is too real to have a candy coated moral.

Anna drives her best friend Ellen home from a party, and unusual road conditions lead to a wreck with another car. The driver of the second car, Cameron, is killed. Anna almost loses her eyesight and Ellen is seriously injured and hospitalized. The story is not about fault or blame, but recovery. How does one recover emotionally from such a life changing event? And how does the fact that Cameron was Anna’s brother’s girlfriend impact the family? A fascinating tale that may require you to have a box of tissues nearby.

Read an interview with the author about Wrecked.

King Dork: Book of the Year or Totally Overrated?

King Dork

After reading glowing review after shining accolade, I finally sat down to read King Dork. All the cool kids were doing it, so I figured why not me too?

And then a week passed. And another. What was supposed to be funny, gripping and edgy was turning out to be a tad… boring. I loved the funny band names and the hopelessness of getting a girlfriend (at least one who’s willing to admit they’re together in public).

If you’ve read this, please share your thoughts! Vote for your favorite pseudo-band name in the comments and tell us your favorite parts! Or, if you're like me and didn't like it so much, tell us why!

And if you totally loved, loved, LOVED this book, vote for it on the YA/Teen Quill Awards.

Guitar Girl ROCKS!

Guitar Girl by Sarra ManningHave you ever wanted to be in a band? Seventeen year old Molly Montgomery was just playing at birthday parties and local gigs with two of her girl friends when they were "discovered." Their new manager added two guys to their girl-band and made them rocket to fame, but touring in a band isn't nearly as fun as it looks. All that Molly ever wanted was to be just like her heroine, Ruby X, the feminist guitarist who inspired the girl-band movement. Molly's Very-Cherry-Red-hair makes her look so cool, but she feels horrible inside. In the opening chapter, Molly admits that her record company is suing her for 5 million pounds, but you have to read the book to find out why!

I loved Guitar Girl and I can't wait to read Sarra Manning's new book Pretty Things, which is about four teens at a summer drama workshop in which Brie loves her gay best friend, Charlie, who's crushing on straight Walker, who's fallen for lesbian Daisy.

Want to start your own band? Find a friend and go for it. Or check out the Garage Band Cookbook or read a rock star biography!

Maximum RideMaximum Ride: The Angel Experiment by James Patterson

Have you ever dreamed you could fly? Well, Max and her friends can. This would be cooler if her wings weren’t the result of a corporation full of mad scientists  who enjoy genetic engineering. You know the kind—they lock up their human subjects and only take them out of cages for horrible experiments and testing. Thankfully Max and a few of her fellow lab subjects escaped and have successfully remained hidden for the past four years. But the scientists have unleashed the Erasers--part human, part wolf, and completely scary--who have found their home and kidnapped Angel, the youngest of Max's "flock." The flock isn't about to let the Erasers or the scientists keep Angel, so Max will have to plan a rescue mission.

Yeah, you heard me right, Patterson is developing a soundtrack for the series; I like how he thinks!

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - Teen Book Review

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
C.S. Lewis wrote this book about 56 years ago. It's about four brothers and sisters whose names were Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy and how they got into Narnia. Narnia is a land with fauns, dwarfs, centaurs, and dryads and all sorts of animals that talk. It's my favorite book and on a scale of 1 to 10, it definitely would be a 10.

Scrambled Eggs at Midnight By Brad Barkley and Heather Hepler

Scrambled Eggs at MidnightCalliope is 15, and has moved 23 times in the last 4 years. Her mother makes jewelry and works at Renaissance Faires as a tavern wench in the summer . She packs Cal up in the old Datsun and moves on whenever the mood strikes her. They sleep in a tent, or sometimes a cheap motel. The mail forwarding can barely keep up with them. Needless to say, Cal is used to leaving things behind.

Eliot has lived for the last 7 years at the isolated Christian weight loss camp that his parents run in the mountains near
Asheville, North Carolina. His family used to be wonderful, before his dad stopped selling swimming pools for a living and found religion. Eliot is used to putting on a happy face for the campers, cleaning and repairing cabins, and keeping up appearances.

When your parents make your life unusual and you don’t have any friends, all you can do is hope there is someone out there who might understand you.

When Cal and Eliot meet in a bookstore in town, the first thing Cal noticed about Eliot is that his lips are green, a science experiment gone (quite obviously) awry. When Eliot notices Cal's, he sees fireworks exploding in red, green and white - her hair, her eyes, her bright smile. (Eliot has fireworks on the brain because he is secretly constructing them in the garage behind the camp.)

The story of Eliot and Cal’s summer is funny, romantic and wonderful to read. Eliot and Cal take turns telling the story, and by the end of the book, you will feel like you know both of them.

Travis Barker From eonline.com:
MTV Curse Meets the Barkers

by Natalie Finn

This is getting serious.

Following in the footsteps of Nick Lachey & Jessica Simpson and Carmen Electra and Dave Navarro, Blink-182 drummer and MTV reality star Travis Barker is seeking a split from his wife of less than two years, former Miss USA Shanna Moakler, People magazine reported Tuesday.

Barker's rep, Dvora Vener, said that Barker filed for divorce Tuesday morning but declined to offer any other details behind the breakup.

Season two of the couple's reality series, Meet the Barkers, premiered in January, with the last episode celebrating the Christmas Eve birth of their daughter, Alabama. Barker and Moakler also have a two-year-old son, Landon, and Moakler has a seven-year-old daughter, Atiana, with ex-boyfriend Oscar De La Hoya.

All three kids were featured on Meet the Barkers, which, in the tradition of The Osbournes, set out to tell the tale of a rocker and his own madcap version of domesticity.

My kind of sports list...

David Beckham autobiographyFrom msn.foxsports.com:

Top 10 sports pretty boys
Mo Arora / Askmen.com

"Nice game, pretty boy!"

So said Cosmo Kramer derisively at New York Mets first baseman Keith Hernandez in an episode of Seinfeld, prompting a rapidly escalating spitting incident that teaches us all a valuable lesson: There are few taunts more offensive in the lexicon of sport than "pretty boy."

In the ultra-masculine domain of athletics, this term calls into question your manhood, toughness and heart. Worse, still, it is often true.

Of course, an athlete must be more than simply good looking in order to be labeled a "pretty boy." In the world of sports, a "pretty boy" is someone whose prodigious talent is often overshadowed by his looks and off-field image. A "pretty boy" is someone whose Achilles' Heel is that he invites jokes about breaking a heel.

With that in mind, here's a list of the athletes most likely to whine about the officiating every time he misses a shot, or maybe he just owns The Notebook on DVD.

Continue reading here for the top ten list of pretty boys in sports.
